Originally when we instituted our Leak Tag Program, we did so for companies with steam, air and water leaks in their factories. In these kinds of facilities, pressure and fluid leaks can account for thousands of dollars a year in loss from just a few small leaks!
However, leaking water at home is just as much of a problem.
A leak in a pipe inside can not only cost you a small fortune in usage charges but can also cause water damage to the interior of your home, the foundation and the wood that makes up the structure of your home. This water, unchecked over time, can cause structure supports to weaken and standing water can attract insects. The drip-drip-drip of a cracked pipe can eventually destroy everything around it. It can really add up!
Now even if we don’t consider potential damage to the property, lets look at the damage a leaky pipe can cause just in monetary loss from the leak itself.
Lets say that you are billed at a $2 per every 1000 gallons of water.
Now lets say you have a drip that loses 10 gallons/hour.
Over a day, that’s 240 gallons.
Over a week, that’s 1,680 gallons
Over a month, that’s 7,200 gallons.
That’s 7,200 gallons has cost you over $15/month! Over a year, that’s over 86,400 gallons, or over $180/year for just that one leak! That’s only in water costs alone. Imagine what 86,400+ gallons of water dripping in one place will do to the wood and cement and other materials it is eroding away at.
