What difference does a drop of water make?

by admin on August 5, 2007

Whether from a drippy faucet, a leaky pipe or another water source gone awry, a single source of water leak can make a huge difference in your water bill each month.

Let’s assume that your fixture leaks at a rate of one drop per second. That’s a pretty steady but small drip. Lets say each drop represents 1/10,000th of a gallon.

At 1 drop/second, that’s…

  • 60 drops/minute
  • 3600 drops/hour
  • 86,400 drops/day.
  • 2,592,000 drops/month
  • 31,104,000 drops/year

If you put it in gallons lost, that’s 8.6 gallons/day! Over the course of a month, that’s almost 260 gallons/month!

Imagine what 260 gallons/month lost would do to your water bill, water pressure and possible heating or gas bill if this water is heated. Now imagine the collateral damage it causes with water sitting and rotting under your house, in a fixture of in your floor boards.

Clearly, a drop of water makes a huge difference!

We’ve developed a poster to remind us about the importance of each and every drop:
