Perhaps the most important point behind water conservation is the carbon cost of water. In a recent podcast, Bill Cooper, Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UC Irvine said that water is the “low-hanging fruit” for reducing carbon emissions. (You can hear the podcast on my website.) Transporting water imposes a huge carbon load. The cost is through power plants needed to create electricity to pump water as well as directly through vehicle emissions. Reducing atmospheric carbon is a reason to conserve water even in areas where the stuff is plentiful and cheap.
